The detective hero will accept the assignment. A death, related to the assignment the hero has just accepted, will occur. The death will surprise the hero. He will know this represents trouble. In The Maltese Falcon (1939), Miles dies and he is having an affair with his wife, which will implicate him.

The detective hero has a loyal secretary, who is secretly attracted to him. She is attractive, but not overly so. Perhaps they have had an affair in the past. He takes her for granted.
