A staple of the Hero's Journey and Transformation. Separate and distinct from the Inciting Incident. A Call for the Hero to set out on a Journey; an implicit Call to face Challenges. It is the undergoing of the Journey that will Transform the Hero and provide him (or her) with the capacity to conquer challenges that were previously unconquerable. In Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Clyde invites Bonnie for a drink.

The Hero will suffer an Unbearable Antagonism that will force his hand (and push him past the stage of Lack of Commitment). In Star Wars (1977), storm troopers kill uncle Owen and aunt Beru. In The Incredibles (2004), Mr Incredible sees a person on the street being mugged. This causes him to snap.

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth): Romantic Challenge Development
The Romantic Challenge is developed or further made explicit (post Trial 3 and the conquest of the Outer Challenge). The Hero has come a long way but he (as well as the audience) are reminded that this has yet to be conquered: In An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), Zach resists Paula when she says she's going after what she wants (him). In Dances with Wolves (1990), Stands with a Fist is increasingly attracted to John.
