188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth)- Polar Opposite First Threshold

Polar Opposite. The New World of the First Threshold is markedly different from the Hero's Ordinary World; it is usually the Polar Opposite of the Ordinary World. In The Matrix (1999), the world of the machines is nowhere like Neo's normal World. In Goodfellas (1990), the World of the gangsters is the polar opposite of both Henry's and Karen's parent's World. In Dances with Wolves (1990), Fort Hayes is quiet and uninhabited. John Dunbar has just come from fighting in the civil war.

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth)- Hero's Journey- Femme Fatale Nature

The femme female will have an element of the mysterious about her, adding to her already dubious status. In The Maltese Falcon (1939), Sam can never reach O'Shaugnessey when he needs to.

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth): Significance of Apotheosis

The Apotheosis is simply the result of conquering the romantic challenge. Once one has been set free of limitations, one feels a release. That is the aopotheosis. It is the realisation, the actualisation of the hero.

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth): Rebirth and Baptism

Once he (or she) has seized the sword, the hero is reborn. But the rebirth occurs in a special place, which the hero travels to (night sesa journey), is baptised (water is involved), symbolically dies (near death) and then reawakens.

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth): Road of Trials 1

The first part of the Road of Trials is a pulling away from his Old Self. This takes various forms depending on whether the hero is willing or unwilling. For example, in The Godfather (1972), Michael visits and learns of his old town, Corleone. He grows closer to it - this is a pulling away from his old self, which would have had nothing to do with it.

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth): Fate of the Demon King

The demon king lives in a world of infinite treasure but is constantly pursued (and must avoid) the forces of good. He has gained his kingdom by committing the vilest of acts. The antihero realises that a kingdom such as this is the elixir. But in order to obtain it, he must follow the same path [of committing vile acts]. In Scarface (1983), Tony wants to take over Frank's dope empire.

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth): Post Mastery Of The Two Worlds And Selves

Post the Crossing of the Return Threshold and before the Master of Two Worlds and Selves, a hell of a lot happens that is rarely given mention. The Final Conflict (a metaphor for this stage) follows a distinct process. It is not unusual for a surprise catharsis, post the defeat of the antagonism. In Straw Dogs (1971), Tom's son attacks again, from nowhere. This final catharsis is a metaphor for the antagonism's last gasp (the antagonism is after all the hero's own id).

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth): Final Conflict: Developing The Antagonism

Post the Crossing of the Return Threshold and before the Master of Two Worlds and Selves, a hell of a lot happens that is rarely given mention. The Final Conflict (a metaphor for this stage) follows a distinct process. One aspect of this process is the buildup of the antagonism's threat. In Straw Dogs (1971), the Major arrives (a mentor and supernatural aid) and is quickly defeated by the Demon King (Tom) [the Major confronts Tom; Tom shoots the Major].

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth): Antihero: Threshold Guardians

Threshold Guardians mark the entry to the First Threshold, but a Threshold Guardian must also be overcome in the First Threshold as a whole - this is a marker of evolution. In Spartacus (1963), Spartacus must overcome Marcellus. In Scarface (1983), Tony must overcome the Colombians.
