It’s not personal. In fact it is probably the crowd that you are hanging around with. They could be a bad influence on your rankings.
Here’s what I mean. What group of users would you say gives the search engines the most grief?
If you answered the Internet marketing crowd, give yourself a pat on the back.
Now we may think that the search engines were created for us but the truth is the “Classic IM” represents a very small percentage of Internet ecommerce.
In contrast Google and friends hold the IM group to blame for over 90% of the spam and ranking manipulation tactics. So if your site fits the “Profile” of what Google considers bad practices you will get lumped into the Les Miserables of the Internet world.
The IM world operates in a herd mentality. We get an email from a respected guru or go to our favorite forums read a post about the latest greatest software or tactic and before you can every make any real money with it the search engines are on to it and shut it down. And yes they are on to it faster than ever before.
WHY?... Because Google has devised a “Profile” of what they consider spam producing behavior. Just the way the FBI creates profiles of certain criminal types.
You know if a person does this and does that they are showing tendencies that are prevalent in this type of individual. Since it is impossible even for Google to physically review every site, they needed to develop a “Profile” of behavior types that they feel provide a poor user experience.
This way all that has to be done is to program these profiles into the “Bots” and turn them loose on the unsuspecting spammy Internet marketer.
Just what Google considers undesirable is an ever evolving definition, but if you look closely there are signs to be found.

Duplicate Content. The question here is how much duplicate is duplicate, and when is duplicate content a bad thing and when is it OK?

Un-themed Link Exchanges. Google considers a link as a vote for your site. So if your site is about Bulldogs a link or a “Vote” if you will from another canine related site is cool. You’re both experts in a related field so you should know if the others information is quality or not right?
In the same regard, a link from a gambling site to your Bulldog site won’t carry the same weight because you are not experts in the same or related field. Yes this is still true even if the gambler bets on the “Under Dogs” still doesn't make his site an authority on Bulldogs.
Things you should do…
Provide a Valuable Visitor Experience. Provide unique informative and or entertaining content. Make sure the linking structure of your site is spider friendly.
The main thing to always consider when building your sites… is if the majority of the Internet marketing community is doing something be sure that you don't follow the herd!
