The worst aspect of the job for me was being expected to pop into the office early evening, pick up the telephone book and cold call. I know how much I hate receiving sales calls, indeed I joined the TPS service months ago, so I really felt for those poor souls whose evening I was disturbing.

My only consolation during this time was the companionship of other equally inept and disillusioned souls. A small group of us could often be found by the coffee machine, cursing the latest hot prospect who failed to purchase, bemoaning our lot in general, and doing anything but concentrating on the job in hand and turning our fortunes around.

We had slowly drifted into membership of the Coffee Club, a workplace limbo, open to anyone and everyone who can’t find anything better to do. A place to chat and be sociable; somewhere to go and put the world to rights; an escape from the drudgery of making a living.

The Internet is choc full of Coffee Clubs, only they are called chat rooms, message boards and forums. They possess the added advantage of anonymity. You don’t have to divulge the slightest detail about yourself, and you usually operate under a pseudonym. The perfect place to retreat for a while and communicate, for the most part, in a bizarre net shorthand with lots of LOL and IMHO.

Having only recently decided that I would venture into the world of Internet Marketing, it didn’t take me too long to locate several forum where the guru, newbie and all in between came together to post their success, or, more likely, lack of it, share tips and advice and generally chew up and spit out marketing’s issues of the day. It didn’t take me too long to realise I was drifting once more into the Coffee Club.

You just know that certain familiar names will appear when you log on, because they are in the Coffee Club as well. I’ll look at my watch and suddenly realise that xyz from Australia is still online and it must be 2:30 am over there. Or I’ve popped in and out of the forum during the day and every time I’ve logged in the same couple of names are also present, and I know they’ve not just let the site be open in the background because the little instant Chat box has sad, half started conversations, like “Hi, anyone there?”
