    Poor Grammar, Poor Impression
I've become increasingly concerned about the ignorance of Americans - not those who have learned English as a second language, but native English speakers - regardless of race, income level, schooling or other determining factors. The number of people who read seems to be decreasing in direct proportion to the number of kids growing up with portable dvds, and ipods. Television has become the preferred babysitter for children and the most effective way for adults to anesthetize themselves after a day's work. These days I see egregious (horrible, outrageous, astoundingly bad) grammatical errors on resumes and cover letters, web sites, signs, emails to me.....regardless of management or income level. Some of these are written by people who are in the job market hoping to be invited in for an interview, and their paperwork is full of punctuation and grammatical mistakes. Were they careless? Or do they not know? Maybe it doesn't matter. Maybe the hiring authority doesn't know the difference either. The other day I saw the back of a company shirt that said: providing quality service since 10 years. A company shirt? How many were printed and are worn by employees who walk around advertising that that particular company has someone in an upper-level management position who didn't catch the error or didn't know the difference? Here's a sign I saw in a store a few weeks ago: We do not except credit cards. (It should be "accept".) Last week a senior level manager emailed me. He confused "its" and "it's" in three differe

Forget Enron - The Biggest Scam Is Still To Be Exposed
As you may already have ascertained, it is our view that current, conventional advertising has been beset with problems from the very beginnings. Probably the principal problem advertising has is …accountability. Or rather the lack of it!As we have said before, the real differences that exist between competing products is frequently perceived as no longer significant. The result is that it is not self evident just what an advertiser has to sell that is so different and worthy of consideration. Therefore, if no significant point of difference is apparent, why is that product more deserving of the customer’s money than any other? It was partially because of this that we have seen a dramatic rise in the acceptance of own-label products and now services, in this country as elsewhere.Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda and so on, all developed their own-label offerings and the manufacturers, along with their agencies observing on the sidelines, sat back and let them do it.In some cases they were complicit in doing so.Now own-label has become so acceptable to consumers that they not only cover grocery products and with a differentiation between value and premium, the brand extensions encompass, motor insurance, home insurance, life cover and a multitude of offers that did not exist only a few years ago.And it is unlikely to stop there. Sainsbury’s have at the time of writing, announced plans to enter the scratchcard market as a rival to Camelot, despite being an outlet for the purchase of the l

Getting Every Penny on the Table
In my younger days I was a member of the Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce). Membership at the time was limited to young men 21-35. In Tacoma, our largest fundraiser was the yearly fireworks stand.Near the end of June we would sign a contract for an order of fireworks based on the previous year's sales. The fireworks company would deliver the modular panels of the fireworks stand to its location (the same street corner each year), and we would screw and wire it together. The fireworks chairman would schedule husbands and wives for their shifts and we would all do our duty. It wasn't hard work. Actually, it was fun. We talked and joked with each other as we waited for customers, just like most businesses. We cleaned up our messes and sometimes like little children we would set off a few fireworks from time to time to alleviate boredom. The last crew would generally close up and then cross the street to the Mountain Tavern for a beer or two and a game of pool.In selling fireworks we would see single adult males, parents, grandparents and children . . . lots of children. The fireworks were labeled "safe and sane" so we could legally sell fireworks to any age. Most of us had grown up playing with fireworks both legal and illegal. It didn't take me long to develop my sales attitude. Having worked at my parents' motel from the seventh grade up to college, I knew about selling to the public. And as the son of small business owners I knew how important each sale was. For the Jaycees this was the fundraiser th

Increase Your Sales 300% with Public Relations
Many small business owners with whom I talk simply don’t see the need for public relations – much less the need to hire an agency to represent them. I often hear small business owners say "I don’t need you, I write my own press releases!" That’s great, but if you consider "public relations" to just be writing a press release then you are probably missing 90% of the value. The fact is, almost any small business can receive a positive return on investment if they manage their expectations and budget accordingly. Unlike advertising, you can’t dictate where, when, what and how often your message will be delivered. Public Relations is many things, but it is NOT "Free Ads." Instead, one should view it as the ultimate “word of mouth.” Instead of one happy customer telling 10 of her friends, today's Internet media can reach MILLIONS of people in a single day! This is a great thing if you have confidence in your brand and patience with reporters who may have never heard of you, your company, products or even your new business concept. Ultimately, if you can sell the idea to an individual reporter he will talk about it – to his readers, co-workers and his friends at the TV station on the other side of town. The long term benefits of public relations are what really create value. Unlike advertising, public relations campaigns aren’t always powerful immediately, nor do its effects fade once the campaign is over. Good press will last for months and years. It will also help defend your company from negative things that may c
