When You are Thirsty is Not the Time to Dig a Well
When did you last set a time to brainstorm with the members of your management team? Fresh ideas and ways of improving performance do not happen by accident. They come from devoting time to their creation, development and implementation. Too often we only seek new concepts or methods when the ship is sinking. Remind yourself that any change or process takes time to become effective, rarely will the results be immediate.CONDUCT REGULARLY SCHEDULED MANAGEMENT MEETINGSOnce a month, more often if necessary. Are You Charging Enough?
What Happens When You Are Under Pressure? We have all been there. Cash flow is a little lean and you are really starting to hate eating Blue Box Kraft Dinner. Murphy's Law also means a potential customer will NOW call you and want you to drop your rates...right down to the bottom of the barrel. Do you do this "just once" and relieve the financial pressure? Or do you walk away?Learn To Value Your Product And Win Customers Too!Remember in sales - it is all about Win/Win. When most people think of communicating, they visualize talking and getting a point across in a clear, effective manner. Speaking or writing to communicate a message is only part of effective communication. The complementary part of communication is listening. As professionals, we are usually striving to improve our communication skills by taking speech classes, honing our presentation skills, or participating in ways of producing increased influence. We feel the better we are at getting our point across or communicating ideas, the better we are at communicating. There is a flip-side to communication – listening. Few people consider they can significantly improve their communications skills and thereby increase their leadership skills, by learning to listen more effectively.

How does listening impact your performance as an executive? Not only is good listening a core competency of leadership, but your listening abilities can actually be measured and evaluated. To determine how to improve your listening abilities, you need to evaluate yourself on how well you listen to others. Do you stop what you are doing when others speak? Do you reflect back what you hear to create clarity? Do you ask questions?

    When the Cold Wind Blows
Seasons change and the weather goes along for the ride. Sometimes the heat is so oppressive you can literally fry an egg on your driveway. Listening is a whole-mind activity that requires concentration.

There are many challenges to effective listening – some are controllable and some we simply have to recognize and work around. For example, many of us think we can multi-task well, but the truth of the matter is we probably have just learned to do multiple things simultaneously, but we do them poorly.
