The Employment Interview - How Hard Can It Be
bInterviewing Requires SkillInterviewing a new job candidate sounds easy. After all, you are in control. You have something to offer. You can select anyone you choose to select. Right? That sounds good but in reality interviewing a person to fill a job opening is one of the more difficult tasks you may face as a manager. It does require specific skills to do it right and increase your chance of hiring the ideal person for the job; the person that will stay and fit in with the culture of your company. That being said, I personally don’t know of one company that has a formal program to train their managers on how to conduct an interview. Interview training is much the same as training managers how to conduct a performance review. It is a rarity to find a company that actually does it. Recruitment, retention, interviewing and performance reviews are not just a “Huma

Small Business Marketing Strategy - Use Achievers to Validate, Implement and Criticize
As mentioned in an earlier article, a Bloom Team made up of four or five of your achievers can really accelerate your marketing. This Bloom Team can be used to: Validate Implement Criticize When an achiever validates one of your ideas, she lets you know your thinking is on the right track. Coaxing creative ideas to the surface is a recurring marketing challenge. Not all your ideas will generate a positive change for your company. To create is to risk. You’ll never discover completely fresh ideas or combine old ideas in innovative ways unless you are willing to climb onto some fresh limbs. And that means that yes, sometimes you are going to fall. Some of your best creative ideas will wind up being outlandishly stupid. That’s okay! If a few of your proposals aren’t a little bit out there then you ar
Soon after I founded my company in 1989 I realized that the greatest challenge I faced was learning how to hire employees and manage them effectively. As a new employer I quickly learned that without proper motivation many employees will do as little as possible to get by until payday. I had to find ways to motivate my employees to provide an optimal experience for every customer, every day. I learned that employee management and accountability ensures that the experience my company provides is desirable, leading to repeat customers.

With the guidance of a good leader people often perform beyond even their own expectations. Continually motivating your employees is essential to having them perform at their best every day. Of course, if you hire qualified employees with proven track records your management hurdles will be lessened. Still, verbal and written communication are vital to effective leadership; therefore, your company policies must be clearly stated and strictly enforced.

You must motivate employees to take responsibility for their own actions. Each employee should have the understanding that the success of the company (and the paycheck they are expecting) depends upon all employees consistently performing to the best of their ability and working as a team. How do you accomplish this?

Does Economic Recession Mean Career Vision Recession?
In my conversations with individuals over the last several months a common theme has occurred. Many have said, “In light of the economic times, I need to put my own Career Vision on hold.” Does Economic Recession mean a Career Vision Recession? If Career Vision were a one-time situation or event, I would agree with that statement. HOWEVER, Career Vision process and creation is much like growing a garden. We can’t stop the pruning, watering, weeding, hoeing, general care and feeding. If we do the garden dies and we have to start all over. During a drought, we water more. This is the similar to the way to frame what needs to happen with your Career Vision during a recessionary time. You may need to focus on the tactical and practical. If you are unemployed and needing to put food on the table, practical choices may need to be made. But the movement towards

Sales Success Tip - You MUST Know the Answer to This Question
Most sales professionals know that one of the secrets to successful sales is asking good questions. Many times however, the most important question is the question you must ask of yourself."What? Ask myself questions? You mean in the middle of a conversation with my customer?" No, no, nothing that drastic. Not that drastic, but certainly incredibly effective. You have to ask yourself what your purpose is. Certainly, your purpose is to make money…to make money for yourself and also for your company. But for the most successful sales pros I have ever met or have ever personally encountered as a customer, it's about more than that. It has to be. Think about this. The last time you had an encounter with a customer who gave you the impression that his/her #1 goal was simply to make a sale and book the profits, what was your reaction? If you are like me

Price Perception - How to Focus on Value Not on Price
    1. Price is Elastic.Believe it or not: Only a small percentage of buyers (of any product) base their buying decisions solely on getting the lowest price. If most did, we'd all be driving around in the cheapest cars on the market. Needless to say, we don't!How about the business owner (consultant) who raised the fee for his service from ? 220 to ? 2, 295 in one leap - and the same percentage of prospects continued to buy. They "stretched" with the price. If you had an identical product in three different price perceived retail locations (such as say Harrods, BHS and a Car Boot Sale), then you would see a marked difference in what people were prepared to pay for this identical product. Sometimes it's just a variation in the target market -i.e. as our price changes, our target market may change, which brings me onto...2. Differe

    Build Respect

Integrity is possibly the most important trait you should possess. Employees must be treated equally and fairly, as should every customer and vendor. You must remain professional at all times, using diplomacy and tact to discipline undesirable behavior. In addition, you must always lead by example.

Here are some tips for building respect:

    • Set the example -- be certain that you remain in compliance with all company policies.

    • Keep a positive attitude. If your employees are to stay positive you must set the example.

    • Smile and be cheerful, but do not tell jokes or play pranks.

    • Remain professional and somewhat impersonal at all times.

    • Do not share personal matters with any employee.

    • Do not give advice regarding personal matters – refer employees to professional counseling.

    Hire Right

It is imperative that you hire honest, hard working individuals with proven track records - not just any warm body that walks through the door. Never lower your standards to fill a position – your other employees will question your integrity and resent you for hiring a problem that they have to deal with on the job. It is your responsibility to hire individuals who can easily adapt to your company policies. Therefore, you must obtain a complete history on your job candidates. Be certain that your application forms request employment history for the past 20 years - include the statement "Attach additional sheets if necessary" on your application.
