Vision And Mission Statements - Are They Worth The Trouble?
In a highly competitive and rapidly changing world, organizations need focus, clarity and clear direction. One of the tools that can contribute to this outcome is a mission - vision, defining statement and/or statement of purpose. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter what you call it as long as you have some way of determining what you are, what you are becoming and why you want to get there. It is a statement of purpose. It is a statement that determines how all the little daily decisions are made by everyone in the organization. This statement becomes the tem
Assumptions can kill a sale. In my sales training workshops, I frequently discuss the importance of not making assumptions about a person before, during, or after the sales process. Participants frequently nod and tell me that they NEVER make assumptions. One person (Doug Maquire, www.MaquireMarketing.com) sent me this story of a situation that occurred in a department store he worked in many years ago.

“I was the 'young kid' who had signed on to take the 9 month Management Training course for a department store chain. Sales people were generally assigned specific areas to cover within the store but being a 'management trainee' I had to learn all departments.”

One day, a rough looking middle aged fellow entered the store. He was dressed in well-worn workpants, work boots, and a soiled red and black plaid shirt just like you'd expect a lumberjack to wear. No one approached him (I guess he didn't look like a good sales prospect) and he didn't move from the front entrance; he just stood there surveying the store from left to r

How to provide Superior Customer Service
As many of you know, I have made it my mission to change the world's view point of customer service. Too many people today have just accepted the fact that no matter where they go, they will receive less than acceptable customer service. THAT'S NOT ACCEPTABLE!When we work so hard for the money we have, why spend it at a business establishment (no matter what type of business) that provides you less than superior customer service? Does it really make sense to hand your money over that way? Still not clear... okay, let me present this to you in another w

    Ace Your Job Interview
The key to getting the job you want is convincing your prospective employer that he needs you in the company. Your resume may not be as extraordinary as another applicant’s, but you always have the chance to convince your prospective employer by impressing him during your interview. In an interview, you will be selling yourself. You will be convincing the employer that you are the best person for the job.You do not go to war without bullets, do you? Thus, before going to an interview, you should be mentally and physically prepared. The following are t

Lesson 15 - Meeting the Prince with More Reputation than Power
The StoryBusiness has a habit of testing us as individuals and as entrepreneurs. Several years ago I retained my first entertainment agent to represent my business and me. This was at a time when I was coming closer to the threshold of gaining national attention for my speaking and writing business. Retaining a qualified agent had become necessary for representation purposes in particular. In the weeks following the initial meeting with the new agent, he introduced me to a woman named Sherry who owned a newspaper in Richmond. I contacted Sherry on h
ike you'd expect a lumberjack to wear. No one approached him (I guess he didn't look like a good sales prospect) and he didn't move from the front entrance; he just stood there surveying the store from left to right. I walked up to him and asked if I could help. He said, “I need a pair of wool socks. No nylon, no cotton, just wool socks.” We went to the Menswear Department and both watched as the sales person assigned to that department walked away from us so he wouldn't have to waste his time going through the full selection of hosiery just to find a single pair of wool socks.”

I then started asking questions about style, colour, size, price range, etc., to help narrow down exactly what the customer needed. “It don't matter.” he replied, “Just wool socks. I work back in the bush and we only come to town every three weeks. Nylon makes my feet sweat. Cotton's okay but it don't last long. I need socks I can wear at work everyday and that's wool.”

So, I checked the content label of every style and colour of sock that we had in
