Whatever the reason... Skunk odor is something nobody ever forgets and nobody wants "up close and personal" in any event, for any reason.

Growing up as a child there were various remedies offered for my first skunk loving dog. We bathed him in tomato juice, lemon and vinegar... all to no avail. He stank. We suffered.

Luckily for us, it was a short lived affair. He got over it... not so his latest predecessor. This fellow seems to (have some sort of addiction, as it were...

Over the course of his young life, he has had more skunk encounters than any dog I've ever owned. See what I mean about addiction? I think... God Help Me. He likes it.

It is my fondest hope that the remedy... which absolutely is the only thing I have ever found that works, is unpleasant enough for him to cause him to curb his appetite.

So here it is... I'll give you the real deal on this amazingly potent and powerful odor and how to overcome it.

In a small stainless steel or ceramic mixing bowl, combine:

1 to 2 cups baking soda
thickness desired may vary add or subtract accordingly)
8 to 16 oz 3 percent hydrogen peroxide liquid volume measure
4 to 8 drops mild hand dish washing liquid

Mix thoroughly. When you stop mixing, the mixture will start to "set up" that is to say, it will harden and thicken. Not to worry. It will become a nice liquid again as soon as you re-stir it.

You want a "liquidy paste" which you can apply directly to the dog's fur (in my case) or, you want a wet scrub you can apply directly to skunk sprayed surfaces such as trash cans, driveways, cement or vinyl wall siding.

It is safe to treat grass, or other outdoor areas with this treatment, so long as the liquid detergent levels are low, as specified in the

These ingredients will not only remove skunk odor from a dog sprayed directly... Trust me on this one, I know. But they will also work on all kinds of organic odors.

Apply the paste to the affected area. Let it dry if you like... (unless it's a dog!) It will do a fine job this way. In carpets you can just vacuum it up after it dries. On cement you can rinse it off with clean running water.

You'll be putting water, soda and oxygen into the environment all things which are naturally present, and will not create or promote pathogens, toxins or long term "consequences" to your local environment.

How sweet is that?

Oh, and if it is a dog you are treating... start at the head and work to the tail. Then try. I said try. To let it stay on for up to five minutes. If your dog is like mine he/she will use this time to try to shake.. If you can prevent this, do. It leaves a mess of white dry spots everywhere! Happpily they wipe away with water.

Then rinse off. The dog will look brighter and whiter if it has any white fur. But more importantly, the dog, even if sprayed directly, will smell almost normal.

I say almost because if the dog is like my dog, he will have gotten a shot right in the kisser. So he'll have skunk uck on his face. And it's very hard to wash the face with this method. You can do it, it's even safe, but they don't like it, that's for certain.

So your dog might have a smelly mug, but the rest of him or her will be fresh and MUCH better.
