I have to say I never had anyone pray for me to receive the gift of prophecy, I have always had Jesus speak to me and one day He simply told me to go into a fast food restaurant and give a girl that He described to me a message from Him. I went into the restaurant wondering whether a girl in a red top and black pants was actually sitting where the Lord had told me she would be and when she was sitting there I was a little shocked and suddenly I became nervous. I call this the prophet’s gut.

The prophets gut

The very first time I ever prophesied in a church was some 15 years ago. I had no idea what I did was prophecy. Born and raised a Baptist I knew little about the gift of prophecy at that time and so it proves you don’t even need to know what you are doing or what something is for the Holy Spirit to use you.

We were in the midst of the praise and worship service when the minister came to the microphone and said that the Lord had a message that He wanted to give the church and that someone in the audience had the message. As soon as he said that, a scripture verse came to my mind, “Come to me all that are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” I also got a picture in my head of a shepherd carrying a lamb around his shoulders like I had seen on a Keith Green album one time. As soon as I got the verse and picture I had an inkling that this pastor was searching for this.

As soon as the Holy Spirit put it on my mind that this was what the pastor wanted, my gut went into an unholy fear and trepidation similar to that you would experience on the way to he headmaster’s office at school being sent by your teacher.

All sorts of excuses came to my mind.

“I am just making this up.”

Let me tell you that this is one of Satan’s most common thoughts he places in your mind. You think it’s your thought but it is Satan placing it there. “It can’t be possibly from the Lord, this is just my own thought”, you think.

“I am new to this church, I can’t speak for God.”

I had the “I am only making this up” thought and when I thought through this one as the Holy Spirit kept on showing me that it was what He wanted me to share this second thought came to mind. “How could I give a church a message from God?” I had only been going there a few weeks and I was not a well known person.

And this feeling of almost being sick, this prophets gut persisted.

A man spoke up and gave a message to the pastor and congregation and the pastor thanked him and was gracious but said that although what the man had shared was useful it was not the message that the Lord wanted to share and that he was still waiting. Then he said. “It obvious that the Lord wants to share this message and I cannot go on with the meeting unless this person shares with it. If you are feeling nervous but you have a message that has been put on your heart, please share it. I will go through each of them one by one until we find what the Lord wants to say. One way to tell that the Lord wants you to speak is suddenly you find yourself very nervous and the last thing you want to do is share the message. Go ahead, have faith and share it.”

Well I am very happy that I had such a Spirit led pastor and man that was very sensitive to the Holy Spirit to ease me into the prophetic in a church. I spoke up and shared the scripture verse the Lord had put on my mind and the picture.

The pastor said, “Well this is very interesting Matthew. You were not here this morning were you?”

“No,” I replied.

“I thought so. Well church this scripture verse was the verse that God put on my heart to preach on this morning and for those that you were here this morning you can testify to that. It seems that the Lord wants me to continue with that verse and preach on it tonight.”

I was blown away. There are many thousands of verses in the whole Bible and I was simply stunned that out of the whole Bible the Lord could place that verse in my mind. I didn’t at that time understand what prophecy was, but I will never forget that day and that occasion. That pastor went on to preach a forty five minute sermon on that verse without notes, I might add a gift few preachers have, the ability to preach without notes.

Receiving a prophetic word

I am constantly amazed to find that many Christians do not hear the voice of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Many Baptists when I ask do they hear from Jesus, reply that they hear from Jesus in the Word.

But even if you cannot hear clear sentences in your spirit like me, you can still minister in the prophetic.

Simply pray that the Lord will use you this week.

The first way the Lord may use you is to show you a scripture passage in the Bible while you are doing your regular reading. The passage or scripture will jump out at you and you will find it being really special.

When this happens ask the Holy Spirit is this for you or is this something else.

Often when you ask that the Holy Spirit will place a persons name in your mind and even if you don’t know if that verse seems applicable to your friend, take it to prayer and ask God for peace if you are to share it with your friend.

Now expect the “prophets gut” and expect “I am only making this up,” and “I am no prophet and not qualified to be giving prophetic words” and if you pray and continue to pray the Holy Spirit will still urge you on.

Approach your friend at church and simply say this.

“Hi (friend)

In my quite time this week I was reading the Bible and I found a passage that really stood out to me. I sought the Lord and felt that I was to share it with you. Here let me show you.”

Turn to the passage and show them and get ready as on many many occasions you will see them emotionally affected by what you share. This is the time to add to the passage and heart felt words of explanation or words of encouragement about the verse that you want. I often find that a word expressed from your heart in love is prophetic.

The entry to the prophetic is love and compassion

When you see tears of gratitude form in a friends eyes and them tell you how happy they are that you were obedient you will experience a joy and feel really special. Let me tell you that joy and feeling special can only get you so far.

The prophet’s gut is a huge hurdle to get over and you’ll need more then the chance of feeling happy to get you over that hurdle time and time again.

The way over the prophet gut hurdle is nothing short of agape unconditional Jesus sort of love and compassion for your friends.

Let me illustrate.

One day I was at a fast food restaurant and the Lord showed me a very pretty girl sitting opposite me. She was a joy to look at. I have to tell you girls, guys love seeing a well dressed pretty lady and don’t need a lot of encouragement to look again. I looked at her a second time and that’s when the Lord spoke to me and said to me, “I have a message for her.”

“I can’t Lord I protested.”

“Why?” The Lord asked.

I find it humorous when the Lord asks us questions. He already knows the answers but He wants us to spell it out to Him as it is a lesson for us. Sometimes when the Lord asks us questions it can be hard to answer.

“She’s too pretty.”

The girl was stunning and in a skirt and top suit set and she was just so well above my class and standing with a day’s growth and jeans on. “So if she was not good looking you would give her the message. Is that it?” The Lord asked.

He had me in checkmate. I’d hate to play chess with the Lord, you’d never win.

“Yes Lord if she was not so pretty I would approach her. You know I always do it. But I can’t approach her, I am just too embarrassed.”

“Well can you listen to the message first and decide.”

“Okay,” I answered.

“Tell her that I can hear her prayers. Tell her that I love her and know she is doing a good work and that I am well pleased with her but I don’t want her to go in the direction that she wants to go. Tell her that I have been trying to show her that but it’s only because I love her that I won’t answer her prayers for that direction. Tell her I have something better for her future then what she thinks and what she wants to pursue.”

I thought and it’s my love for her that won through. I thought of the situation she was in at that moment and how she must be in anguish and I thought, and this is important.

I thought. How would I feel if this was me and a total stranger came up to me and answered my prayers and my heartache?

That’s often the thought you have to think. You have to get over your prophet’s gut that chews your stomach up with anxiety and fear and concentrate on the love you have for humanity through Christ and push forward and deliver the prophetic even if it’s a tough message like this one.

I went over and told her and she was happy I told her and thanked me. Immediately all my anxiety had vanished and I still kept my 100% delivery status with delivering the prophetic.

Even though I had flowed really well in the prophetic I had a pastor of my church commission me into the prophetic when he laid hands on my and prophesied over me that the Lord wanted to raise me up to minister in the prophetic. Since he prayed that prayer, the prophetic exploded in my life and in two years I have given literally thousands of messages to individuals both in person and over the internet via email.
