In the Bible, the book of James says that the double-minded man is, ". . . unstable in all his ways." No doubt about it, to have that stable, fulfilled life, you've got to be committed to something. There are lots of things that you can be committed to, each with its own drawback. For example:
Sports - too sweatyStamp Collecting - too boring
Collecting POGs - too 90's
Comic Books - too slacker-like
Dungeons and Dragons - too geeky
You see, many people today are not willing to make a total commitment to anything. It's not because they're irresponsible; rather, they've been hurt, disappointed, or discouraged by the sometimes painful, frustrating experiences they've encountered in life. Some have failed in business, or in their personal lives, and chosen to take the safe route so they won't get hurt again.
Look at any story of success and accomplishment, and commitment is the one element turning up again and again.
Commitment keeps you from quitting when difficulties arise.
Commitment keeps you from quitting when you experience failure.
But, you know what? Being committed isn't the only thing that's important - you've got to be committed to the right things! It is possible to be committed to the wrong thing:
Counterfeiters are committed.Hitler was committed.
Terrorists are committed.
But beyond these egregious examples, many people have not yet experienced God and are therefore committed to far less than what He intended. Jesus said He came to give abundant life (John 10:10) and, based on His example, we learn that abundant life comes from doing the will of God (John 4:34).
Make no mistake, to ignore the fact that God has created you for a purpose inevitably leads to a nagging sense of dissatisfaction that no amount of money can remove.
So, how can you know what things to commit yourself to? I think we can get a clue from an obscure little verse that we would normally overlook:
Hebrews 8:5 NLT
(5) . . . when Moses was getting ready to build the Tabernacle, God gave him this warning: "Be sure that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you here on the mountain."
Have you ever had a "mountain top" experience? That's what we call those special times of great personal interaction with God. You can have one anywhere:

At chu Distracting Presentation Habits - Ways to Overcome ThemI realize that it is important for us to work on appearing natural while making a presentation. If, however, we become too natural and relaxed, we may not even realize that we have adopted one or more distracting habits that will rob our presentations of their power.Avoid what I call the “speaker’s samba.” It is actually better to stand comfortably still than to get into a repetitious movement that resembles a dance. A mountain top experience is a gift from God during which He reveals things about Himself and His purposes for you. And it's during those times that you learn what is important in life.
Just as Moses built the Tabernacle according to the pattern God revealed on the mountain, so also we are to build our lives according to what God has shown us at our highest spiritual moment.
It is so easy for us to get distracted and discouraged. We are tempted to quit when we fail or others fail us. But, if we will seek out those areas of personal intimacy with God, and then pattern our lives after the things we learn there, we will be committed to the right things. Then, and only then, can we experience that "abundant life".
