    PPC which we have already discussed would also be classed as SEM as it allows relevant ads to be displayed on the first page of a search engine. Another aspect would be paid search engine inclusion. Some search engines only display results for companies that have actually paid to be in the search results. Others use a mix of natural and paid inclusions. Google does not offer paid inclusion for its natural search results.

    Banner Ads – The big flashy adverts at the top of website pages are known as banner ads. If a user clicks the ad it will direct them to the advertisers website. This is probably the first technique used en mass to promote products or services. They are less effective these days so not used as much as in the past as studies show that we are generally 'banner blind.'
