To them prosperity is the selling out of a country's asset,whether it be the giant telecommunications icon TELSTRA or the billions of tons of primary minerals like iron ore, coal, gas and oil. Without these mineral exports the country would be a basket case. We now have no vital infrastructure in place for the "new" industries. No viable alternate energy source is "just over the horizon". Clever Howard has tried mud slinging Rudd (Labor leader heading for "the oval office"). The mud didn't stick, and in fact flew right back into the neo conservative's camp. Even Howard's big budget handout failed to convince the public. Major editorials have targeted the problem down to the general population as just plain sick of Howard and his eleven year rule. This may be so.
My reckoning is that they are living in a world cut off from the mainstream, and the mainstream has become aware of the real story of the "booming economy". The vast majority polled have claimed to be either worse off or at least no better off under the 11-year regime. "We've never had it so good" are the neo-conservative claims. Yes, a $100,000 miner can lay claim, a $1,000,000 + salaried CEO ($23,000,000 annually with Macquarie Bank) would also agree. But the rest are mostly living on debt, unwaringly maybe, living the pretend high life just waiting for the crash.
