I have in my personal library several good books addressing the issues of jail and prison ministry. Each author has taken a unique approach and position in addressing the various issues involved in ministry to the incarcerated.

There are many factors to be considered in a ministry of this nature. Five separate individuals or communities must be brought into the mix: the volunteer, the prisoner and the family of the prisoner, the correctional officer, and the chaplain. The volunteer may become involved in interaction with one or more of these communities.

In this article we have presented general principles and a Biblical foundation for ministry. This work is an overview of volunteer opportunities. It is my desire to challenge, you, the individual reader to be creative in finding ways to involve yourself or your church in one or more of the many opportunities for jail and prison ministry.
