The XP Operating System has a Security Center that contains all of the information and configurations of your PC’s security. To access the Security Center, click “Start”, then “Control Panel”. In the Control Panel, double click the Security Center icon (multi-colored shield).

In the Security Center are three security essentials: Firewall, Automatic Updates and Virus Protection. All three are necessary to protect your computer against Internet threats.

Firewall
Windows XP comes standard with an integrated firewall. Some may think that the Windows firewall is all they need to surf the web safely. The Windows firewall provides some protection, but doesn’t guard against all possible dangers.

The Windows firewall helps block viruses and worms from reaching your computer. It will prompt you for certain connection requests and it will create a security log. This records attempts, both successful and unsuccessful, to connect to your computer and can be a useful troubleshooting tool.

The Windows firewall doesn’t detect or disable computer viruses and worms. It doesn’t stop you from opening or warn you of emails that have dangerous attachments, and it doesn’t block spam or unsolicited emails. This is why additional software is needed to protect your computer and personal information.

Automatic Updates
The Automatic Updates, if it is on, will automatically keep your Windows program current. This will keep it running smoothly and help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats.

Virus Protection
The Virus Protection window only monitors antivirus software installed on your computer. This is not antivirus software and should alert you if you don’t have antivirus software installed on your computer.

The best option for complete Internet security is to purchase an Internet security suite. A suite, combined with the features in the Windows Security Center, will protect you against viruses, spyware, harmful emails and instant messages, phishing scams and other Internet threats.
