Interview Expenses: Should You Be Reimbursed ForThem?
Should you get reimbursed for interview travel expenses? I've helped a number of job searchers who had to travel a fair distance to get to an interview. In most cases the hiring manager I was dealing with would cover reasonable interview expenses. In some cases it was a fairly easy answer especially when it involved flying a person in. In this case, I have never had an experience where a company required someone to fly i

Help Wanted – One New Customer for Growing IT Business
Every business owner needs new customers. They are constantly on the lookout for the next customer, then the next and so on.Your computer services business is the same, you need customers. But do you need as many as you think? Maybe not.Do you know how much each customer contributes to your business? How about how much it costs to bring in a new customer? Or to keep them after they become your customer? It’s the classic dilemma o
I have this student business friend who aspires to become a successful entrepreneur. He’s a bright kid and has good ideas, but when it comes to actually starting a business, he’s all over the place. He feels that he can start a thousand different businesses all at once and have all of them become successful. There is absolutely no focus in that way of thinking and quite frankly, I think an entrepreneur can spread themselves thin by trying to take on the world in one shot.

Having a ton of ideas and wanting to do many things with those ideas is perfectly fine, but there must be some order in which you tackle these concepts and when each is actually implemented. You can’t fool yourself into thinking that you can equally distribute your energy between many different projects simultaneously. When you start trying to do that, you’re never really focusing your creativity on one specific task to make it a

    The Perfect Job
For nearly 25 years, I thought I had it. I worked as a Yellow Page consultant for a former Bell company. Although it was commissioned sales, I was flexible in my hours and was pretty much autonomous in my self-directed days. I was paid well, had good benefits and a nice working office environment. It was a white-collar professional job where I got to visit with the owners and managers of various large and small companies. I was reimbursed for car e

Greet to Great - 3 Ways to Master the Welcome
Are you a Master of the Welcome?Hope so.Because the first words out of your mouth frame the entire customer experience.Consider these two facts:1. According to The Wall Street Journal from February 17th, 2006, you have less than five seconds to make a first impression.2. According to a 2007 report on Hotel Executive, your greeting influences the customer’s perception more than any other act of engagement.Tha

Customer Service Surveys and the Box Checked; Other?
For those of us who have been asked by our vendors to fill out customer surveys, we know all too well that there always is an extra box called; Other. So often, we enjoy checking the box other because the categories do not fit us, you might be interested to find the other is usually the most checked box.You know why this is? Because the people who make the surveys don't make them very well or know their customer very well either. You would t

Minding Your Own Brand: Daddy, What Do You Do At Work?
One morning at breakfast my four-year-old asked me what I do all day at work. As I started to give my thirty-second elevator pitch I use at networking events, I soon realized he didn’t care how “I build stronger brands and improve organizational dynamics” nor did he seem interested in how “I help companies succeed.”So I told him that “I make companies better.” And he asked, “Are they sick?”“Well kind of,” I answered, struggling to brin
distribute your energy between many different projects simultaneously. When you start trying to do that, you’re never really focusing your creativity on one specific task to make it a masterpiece; at most, you’ll be creating many things that are “decent.” Forget about being decent, you want excellence!

We’ve all been victims to this unfocused type of thinking as entrepreneurs. It can be hard to tell your brain to stop thinking and start focusing in on one task at a time. If you’re like me, then hundreds of ideas will pass through your head throughout the day, but the real work begins when you develop the discipline to store away 95% of those ideas and act on the remaining 5% that directly relate to your business at hand; the ideas that are a part of the focus of your company.

When I first started my business in 2004, I was definitely unfocused in my way of thinking. I was focused enough to
